My Site Build It Story: How It All
Started....

Here is my Site Build It story, explaining how it all began for
me. I lived in Washington state, spending some time in Everett, Snohomish, and, finally, Monroe. I found a job
in Snohomish (only a seven mile commute from Monroe), doing web design for a small retail business.
I spent a great deal of time and effort building their web presence into something they could be proud of. I was
proud of myself for the work I put into it for them. I came to work every morning, did what needed to be done,
tried to get them involved (they didn't want anything to do with their own web site! THAT was
frustrating!), and then clocked out for the day. This was my life, day in and day out, week after week, month after
month....well, you get the idea. Nothing really new under the sun.
Finally, after eight years of loyal service to that company in Snohomish, WA, my job
was suddenly outsourced. They gave me the boot, all in the name of saving a couple bucks.
I had mixed feelings about the whole thing. Although it was a stable job that I could count on (or so I
thought!), I was treated poorly. I was given no respect, no consideration, and I hadn't seen a pay raise
in six of those years I was there. No sick pay and no holiday pay either. Did you ever hear the song by Bob
Seger called, "Feel Like A Number?" Yup, that was me.
I was completely expendable to them and realizing that hurt. I'll tell you something else: I was darned tired,
both emotionally and mentally, and it was wreaking havoc on my body. Headaches and stress in my back and shoulders
were typical. Call me naive, but when you sink your life into someone else's business, shouldn't you be able to
expect something in return? Is that so wrong to think?
I came to the realization that loyalty to any company was sheer folly. They
didn't care about me as a person. The only thing they cared about was the money I could put in their pockets and,
beyond that, I was something to use and throw away at their leisure.
I needed to do something for myself, because absolutely no one else was going to do it for me and with the
economy here in the states sinking to an all-time low, the time to make a change for the better was now.
Been there? Maybe you're there now.
